Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.
Replay systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Athletes are granted the ability to question certain calls made by the official, mirroring the system currently in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This development follows just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other situations, such as:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can initiate.
Practical Application
An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its events.
Additional Innovations
Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.
In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
