Administration officials disclosed the initiation of government employee terminations on the end of the week, making good on prior threats linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Early Information

The director of the White House budget office posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the official procedure for terminating staff.

Although the official provided no details on which agencies were affected, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that notices had been issued within that department. Additionally, a DHS spokesperson indicated that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that members at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives warned that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the moves in court.

“It is disgraceful that the government has used the funding lapse as an pretext to illegally fire numerous employees who deliver critical services to the public nationwide,” said Everett Kelley, representing the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the news, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have refused to support a GOP-supported bill to restore funding unless it includes provisions related to health policy. After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until the following week, meaning the deadlock is not expected to be ended soon.

At a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, blasted opposition lawmakers for not supporting the GOP proposal, which was approved in the House on a largely partisan basis.

“This is the last paycheck that 700,000 federal workers will see until Washington Democrats decide to do their job and end the shutdown,” the speaker said. Beginning shortly, American service members, who often live on tight budgets, are going to miss a full paycheck.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Previously, unions sought a court injunction to prevent the administration from carrying out any layoffs during the funding gap. These terminations took place on the same day that government employees received only a incomplete payment for the final days of September but excluding the beginning of October, since funding expired at the beginning of the month.

A public service advocate, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the gridlock’s impact on federal employees.
