In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September revolt was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's older political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Underway

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of leading political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
