The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Consider this a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere on Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like typical biological terror, but beneath Together lies a profound examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have remained a couple for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The story starts when Tim and Millie transition from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a strange force starts to affect the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a slow burn fright fest, interspersing bits of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes during something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He fears the concept of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

The couple confront the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship after ten years. At their core, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor avoids being overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending inspire anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply look at your partner and utter, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform at present.
