Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People purchasing these treatments must be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally see a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the medication report a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Figures show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
